How Instagram shows the label
On Instagram the mark appears as “AI info” under the account name or inside the post’s info menu. Meta applies it to Feed, Reels and Stories, and can add it automatically when it detects provenance credentials (C2PA) embedded by compatible generators or editors.
How to remove it, step by step
- Open the checker and upload the image to see which credentials and metadata it contains.
- If C2PA, XMP or generation parameters appear, run it through the cleaner or use the /c2pa mode.
- Download the clean version and check again that nothing remains.
- Upload that file to Instagram without re-editing it in another app that might reinject metadata.
Nuance and false positives
An authentic photo can also end up labeled: a retouch with AI tools (generative fill, automatic enhancements) or an export from Photoshop, Lightroom or Canva that writes provenance data is enough. In those cases, cleaning the metadata is legitimate and helps the image not be marked by mistake.
Keep in mind that Instagram does not rely only on metadata: it can infer by other means, and there are invisible pixel-level watermarks (such as SynthID) that this tool does not touch. That is why we cannot promise the label will never appear.
Final tip
Make cleaning the last step before you publish. If you edit the image after cleaning it, check it again: many apps rewrite XMP or C2PA when they save.
