DALL·E’s provenance trail
DALL·E’s characteristic trail is the C2PA credential. It is cryptographically signed metadata that travels inside the file and that content-verification tools (and some platforms) read to mark the image as AI-generated. Alongside it there may be XMP blocks and a minimal EXIF, depending on how you downloaded or re-exported the image.
How to clean it
1. Run the image through the checker to confirm whether it carries C2PA and what else it contains. 2. Use /c2pa to remove the provenance credential, and /xmp / /exif for the other blocks. 3. Download the result. No recompression: the pixels stay the same (verifiable by hash).
Supported formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF and HEIC.
What does not change (honesty)
Removing the C2PA credential deletes the label inside the file, but it does not rewrite history: OpenAI may keep generation records on its service, independent of your copy. What we remove is metadata; we do not disable any possible pixel-level mark. In DALL·E the public provenance mechanism is C2PA (metadata), not a known pixel watermark, but the general principle holds: cleaning metadata does not guarantee an image is undetectable.
Privacy
The image is uploaded to our server, processed and deleted after 5 minutes. It is not used for training, we add no watermark, no account is required and the service is free.
