What trail Midjourney usually leaves
The typical trail lives in the metadata, not in the visible image:
- XMP / IPTC: description, authorship or “generated with AI” notes that some flows add on export.
- C2PA / Content Credentials: a signed manifest that declares the file’s origin. It is the most persistent trail and the one that most clearly identifies an image as AI.
- EXIF: a smaller block, but worth checking because it sometimes keeps data from the download or edit step.
We do not assume a fixed field name for every Midjourney version. The checker shows exactly what your file contains before anything is deleted.
How to clean it
1. Upload the image to the checker to see whether it carries C2PA, EXIF or XMP. 2. Pick the cleaning mode: /c2pa for provenance credentials, /exif and /xmp for the rest. 3. Download the clean file. It is not recompressed: the pixels stay intact.
Supported formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF and HEIC.
What cannot be removed
What we remove is metadata and provenance credentials. If an image carried an invisible pixel-level watermark, that is not removed, because it lives in the pixels and not in a file header. Midjourney has no public, documented pixel mark like some other providers, but the limit still stands: removing metadata is not the same as guaranteeing an image is undetectable.
Privacy
The image is uploaded to our server, processed and deleted after 5 minutes. It is not used for training, we add no watermark, no account is required and the service is free.
