How the AI signal appears on Etsy
Etsy does not always overlay a visible label the way social networks do, but Content Credentials (C2PA) and generation metadata travel in the file and can be read by the platform or by third-party tools. On a marketplace, that provenance information affects how the authenticity of your product photos is perceived.
How to remove it, step by step
- Check each product photo in the checker before you publish it.
- Remove C2PA credentials with /c2pa, and generation parameters if the image came from an AI tool.
- Clean EXIF/IPTC/XMP with /exif and /xmp so you do not expose unnecessary technical data.
- Download, check again and upload the photo to your listing.
Nuance and false positives
It is very common to retouch real product photos in Photoshop, Lightroom or Canva, whose exports can embed provenance and make an authentic photo look generated. Cleaning the metadata fixes that. Etsy also has policies on disclosing AI use in your items: cleaning metadata does not replace following those rules, and it must not be used to mislead buyers about what you sell.
Final tip
Use cleaning to correct false positives on real photos of your product, not to hide that an item is AI-generated when Etsy’s policy asks you to disclose it. Honesty about what you sell is part of your shop’s trust.
